Ludwig M. Auer

emeritus neurosurgeon, neuroscientist
and author on political philosophy and ethics

Ludwig M. Auer was born on June 10, 1948, in Bad Ischl, Austria. After primary school in St. Gallen, Styria, and graduating from the BEA Graz-Liebenau Gymnasium, he studied medicine and psychology at the Karl-Franzens University Graz. During and after his training as a neurosurgeon at the University Hospital Graz, he had stays for further professional development and research projects in Germany (Munich, Cologne, Tübingen), USA (Baltimore), Sweden (Gothenburg, Lund), Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Akita, among others). He established a laboratory for cerebral circulation research. His clinical focus areas included microsurgery, endoscopic, and robot-assisted brain surgery. After his “Habilitation” at the University of Graz and serving as interim head of the department, he emigrated to Germany, first to Hannover, then as a full professor and head of the Neurosurgical Department at the University Hospital of Saarbrücken/Homburg. He held visiting professorships in Kolkata and Chandigarh, India, and Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. After his retirement, he worked as a medical expert for victims of medical malpractice and as an author of books and texts on politics, political philosophy, and society.
