Two years later, the young family moved to Linz, where they settled in Hagen Castle (today’s location of the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz) in the then US occupation zone, as his father had found employment there through the mediation of a friendly family from Ischl. However, just four years later, another move followed: Ing. Auer took over the local construction company in St. Gallen, Styria, his hometown. There, his son Ludwig spent his childhood, primary school years, and time as an altar boy (Deanery Church of Admont Abbey since the 12th century). When the question of his further education arose, the church urged his parents to send him to the High School of Admont Abbey, hoping he would become a priest. Others suggested he join the Vienna Boys’ Choir due to his vocal talent. However, his parents decided to send him to the elite school of thr Austrian State in Graz-Liebenau, for which he passed the entrance exam, thanks also to additional tutoring from his primary school teacher, Ms. Hauptlehrerin Huber. His high school years also included stays in France (Lycée Saint Louis de Conzague, Paris), as French was his first foreign language for over eight years; furthermore, a stay at King’s College Taunton, Somerset, in England, and a summer exchange to French-speaking Switzerland.

Professional Career

In the year before his A-level exam, the Austrian “Matura,” Ludwig had to choose between his favorite subject, chemistry, his much-practiced music (piano, flute), and medicine. He chose medicine, began his studies in 1966 in Graz, but continued to take lessons at the Graz University of Music (organ with Prof. Sauseng). After completing his first medical Rigorosum (doctoral examination), he began studying psychology in parallel but did not complete this degree with a diploma.

On January 26, 1972, he received his doctoral degree in medicine and, after a year of training in neurology and general surgery (Klagenfurt, Kitzbühel), began his specialist training as a neurosurgeon at the Neurosurgical Department of Graz Medical School under Prof. Heppner. After only a few months, his clinical training was interrupted for half a year by an invitation from Prof. Blümel to work on a research project on the development of cerebral edema at the Institute for Experimental Surgery of the Technical University of Munich. Immediately after returning to Graz, Auer established a research laboratory for the study of brain damage alongside his clinical training, and one year after being appointed a specialist, he completed his thesis with his work on “hypertensive encephalopathy.” [i] For the development of technical facilities, a close collaboration emerged with the head of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Rector of the Technical University of Graz, Univ. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Schuy. This collaboration resulted in a number of technical diplomas and doctoral theses, as well as a friendly acquaintance. This circle also included Univ. Prof. Dr. Maresch from the Technical University of Graz and FH-Joanneum, who was active at the Institute for Neurotechnology until recently. During these years leading up to his thesis, he also had several stays at the Neurosurgery Department of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, which played a pioneering role in the introduction of new methods in the 1970s under Prof. Marguth. Auer thus brought microsurgery to Graz and introduced extra-intracranial bypass surgery, microsurgical aneurysm surgery, and transsphenoidal microsurgery for pituitary tumors. For the latter, he received support from Prof. Messerklinger, the head of the ENT Depatment at Graz Medical School, which he needed to avoid the conflict that existed in other departmens regarding surgical access to the pituitary gland through the nasal septum.

Further Experimental and Medical-Clinical Activities

His interest in the treatment of brain aneurysms led Auer to Japan in 1981: there, at the invitation of Dr. Ito, the Director of Neurosurgery in Akita, he spent half a year, learned operative therapy in the acute stage, and visited all major Medical Schools in Japan at their invitation for lectures and discussions.

The laboratory for experimental cerebral circulation research was further expanded. Several Japanese guest physicians joined as collaborators, including Dr. Sayama, Dr. Kato, Dr. Ishiyama, and Dr. Sakaki. Austrian doctoral students also conducted work there, including Dr. Deinsberger, who later became head of the Neurosurgical Department in Kassel, and Dr. Mokry, who later became head of the Graz University Neurosurgery. Further experimental work was carried out in collaboration with Prof. Johansson from Lund University and Prof. Heiss, the Director of the Max Planck Institute in Cologne, Prof. Kuschinsky from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Prof. MacKenzie in Glasgow, and Prof. Taylor in Baltimore.

These years also saw a number of clinical projects: one was the creation of an interdisciplinary working group for the treatment of a specific type of pituitary tumor (prolactinoma, which leads to infertility in women). [ii]

Through the mediation of Prof. Messerklinger, as the founder of ENT endoscopic surgery, Auer also came into contact with the founder of the instrument company Storz, which had specialized in endoscopic devices in collaboration with Messerklinger; this led to the development of the first endoscopes for neurosurgery with a built-in channel for laser surgery and continuous irrigation with artificial cerebrospinal fluid. Auer used this method in the following years for the treatment of central brain tumors and brain hemorrhages. The combination of laser-assisted transendoscopic microsurgery and intraoperative imaging with ultrasound led to initial considerations and projects for integrating this surgical method into a robot-assisted system. However, these initial steps did not progress further in Graz because emigration was approaching. Nevertheless, the development of endoscopic treatment for brain hemorrhages still allowed for the realization of a study on the actual effect of this method compared to conservative therapy. [iii]

In the appointment process for Prof. Heppner’s successor in Graz, Prof. Auer was not included on the shortlist because at that time there was a prevailing effort to avoid internal appointments. This decision remained despite a protest vote by the heads of departmens of Graz University Medical School. Prof. Auer emigrated to Germany after one year as interim head of department; he spent a year of fruitful clinical work at Prof. Samii’s department at Nordstadt Krankenhaus in Hannover. From there, Auer was appointed professor and head of department at Saarland University Hospital in Homburg Saar. His activity there ended in 2000 (see supplementary CV for further details).

Besides his position in Homburg, Prof. Auer established an institution for medical research and development, ISM, with professors from Ludwig Maximilian University and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, as well as the Technical University of Applied Sciences and the University of Salzburg, and Auer continued to lead these institutes between 2000 and 2004:

ISM – Institute of Science and Research in Medicine

With the research institution founded in 1995 at two locations, Munich and Salzburg, Prof. Auer pursued the goal of realizing ideas and problems arising from clinical routine through applied research projects. The Scientific Committee included professors from various European universities. Project processing and consulting were assisted by neuroradiologist Dr. Backmund from the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry Munich, and Prof. Auer. The projects included:

– Robot-assisted miniaturized microsurgery (e.g., ROBOSCOPE, ROBO-SIM, and see project list)

– Management of medical data and knowledge: Digitized textbook and diagnostic support for practical medicine (see project list and e.g., MEDNET)

– Telemedicine: (Project TELEMED), processing of medical parameters from patients and accident victims in road and air traffic (AIDER, FLIGHT-MD)

The projects were carried out within the framework of funded projects by the EU and the Austrian Ministry of Science, as well as medical theses and technical diploma theses. After 10 years of activity, the institution was closed due to lack of funding, as Prof. Auer emigrated with his family to Great Britain, where his wife works as a professor in radiological imaging.

Until his retirement, Auer continued his medical expert witness activities, primarily in collaboration with an insurance company: he had offered to assess legal protection cases of patients suffering from medical malpractice, for their justification for a lawsuit against physicians, to advise the insurance company regarding the prospects of success in litigation, and to accompany the selected cases in court as an expert witness (the rate of cases recommended for litigation was under 10%, and that of won cases was close to 90%).

Further Activity as a Writer and Columnist

As a convinced European, Prof. Auer repeatedly advocated for socio-political projects, including the introduction of a method successful in the USA for the (re-)socialization of young people. For this purpose, he had visited the initiator and his facilities in the USA and attempted to transfer their system to the British system with politicians and social institutions in Great Britain.[iv] However, the project ideas got caught in the maelstrom of British anti-EU propaganda. This development further fueled his reflections on the future of liberal democracy in Europe and the Western world as a whole, as well as the role of the EU in the post-Cold War era and the resulting new landscape of confrontation with Russia and China. The books resulting from this are listed in the list of non-medical book publications.

[i] Habil. thesis see list of medical books

[ii] see list of medical books

[iii] see list of medical publications

[iv] Project plan for British politicians and Prince Charles

Childhood and Education Ludwig Auer was born on June 10, 1948, in Bad Ischl, Austria, to civil engineer Ludwig Auer and his wife Stefanie.
